Babi Yar and the Holocaust in the Ukraine

Between 1941 and 1944, almost the entire Jewish population of the Ukraine was killed outside of concentration camps in mass shootings and massacres.

Babi Yar stands for the most extensive annihilation ever committed by Germans. On September 29-30, 1941, more than 33,000 Jews were systematically shot within 36 hours by machine gunfire in the ravine near Kiev. A total of 1.5 million Jews perished in the Holocaust in the Ukraine. In the entire country, there may not be one town or village in which the Jewish population was not decimated or annihilated. Apart from special killing squads (Einsatzgruppen), regular units of the Wehrmacht were involved in these meticulously planned murders. Numerous Ukrainian auxiliary troops proved to be particularly cruel, too. The Ukrainian people have yet to come to terms with this part of their history.
